Common SPF Myths and Facts!!

Common SPF Myths and Facts!!

Everyone desires to maintain healthy skin. To maintain their skin's beauty and youth, people employ a variety of beauty products. Sunscreen cream is one such necessary item for everyday skin maintenance. A sunscreen cream shields our skin from the sun's harmful UVA and UVB radiation.

These days, there are many different types of sunscreen on the market. It is crucial to consider how much sun you will be exposed to when purchasing sunscreen. In a nation like India, it is often acceptable to use SPf 50-level cream for solid and intense sunshine. Now, we’ll know some Common SPF myths and the Facts Behind them.

Myths and Facts

1. Sunscreen will prevent the body from absorbing vitamin D

A crucial ingredient for human health, vitamin D is produced naturally by the body when exposed to UV radiation. UV rays are, however, blocked by sunscreen. So, in theory, wearing sunscreen constantly would prevent someone from obtaining the right amounts of vitamin D.

However, sunlight may pass through clothing, sunscreens degrade over time, and it's probable that people won't remember to use sunscreen every time they see the sun.

Some people are of the opinion that people with darker skin types do not have to use sunscreen. This is so that melanin can diffuse UVB rays and, to a certain extent, defend against sunburns.

According to several physicians and scientists, the body can produce enough vitamin D with just 5 to 30 minutes of daily sun exposure.

2. People with dark skin don’t need sunscreen

Some people are of the opinion that people with darker skin types do not have to use sunscreen. This is so that melanin can diffuse UVB rays and, to a certain extent, defend against sunburns.

People with dark skin don’t need sunscreen

Despite having greater UV protection, those with darker skin should still apply a full range of sunscreen. Melanin does not effectively protect the skin from UVA damage, which can cause early aging and wrinkles in the skin.

Additionally, melanin won't shield the skin from prolonged contact with the sun without protection. Additionally, those with darker skin are not immune to developing skin cancer.

3. Higher SPF gives significantly more protection

The majority of people believe that sunscreen with an SPF of 100 offers more than triple the amount of protection from the sun as sunscreen with an SPF of 30. 97 percent of the sun's rays are really blocked by sunscreen with an SPF of 30.

Although more expensive, higher SPFs will only increase sun protection by 1 to 2 percent, and no sunscreen can provide 100% protection. Additionally, the SPF has no bearing on how long sunscreen will keep you safe; both low- and high-SPF products typically offer protection for two hours or less.

4. You don’t need sunscreen if it’s cloudy or rainy

Water vapor, which makes up clouds, is insufficient as a UV barrier. Although you may not feel the sun's heat, you can still see the light, which proves that UV rays are reaching your skin despite the clouds.

Sunscreen is required until the sun has set for the day if you are going to be in any type of sunlight exposure because it might harm your skin.

5. You don’t need sunscreen if you’re indoors

UV rays are still attacking your skin unless you're completely enclosed in a room without windows. Most windows can block UVB rays, but some UVA rays can still get through, so you should still wear sunscreen indoors.

Sunscreen should therefore be a daily priority, regardless of whether you spend the entire day in an office with large windows, are planning a long drive, or are just blown away by how beautiful the natural lighting in your apartment is.
